Looking for Repetition - Lecture Assignment
Abstract Expressionism
Hans Hofmann
'The Gate', 1959-1960
From what I can see, this painting has the elements of color, shape and space. As for the spectrum, it seems to me its pretty evenly matched between harmony and contrast. There is certainly variety in the painting, but not enough to come out as chaotic. The various colors and shapes in the piece gives it a sense of unity, as well as repetition based on the placement of the squares and rectangles.
Cathedral, 1959
This painting definitely makes use of the elements color and shape. It is also a very harmonized piece, despite the different variations of color. Based on the formation of the squares and shapes, it certainly gives off a sense of repetition as well.
Clyfford Still
1957-D No. 1, 1957
In this piece, the artist made good use of color, value and texture. The use of only two colors, one light and one dark, gives the painting a harmonizing touch to it. As for repetition, because the composition mostly shows only two colors, it makes it so you think it would only show two colors.
Untitled, 1960
This painting uses a great deal of the elements space and value. It also seems to be in the middle of harmony and chaos. The different colors create both chaotic and harmonizing elements to the composition.
Minimalism
Piet Mondrian
Composition II in Red, Blue, and Yellow, 1930
Elements: Color, Line, Space
Very much harmonized and organized based on the formation and placement in the piece. Th use of line in the piece gives it repetition.
Composition with Yellow, Blue, and Red, 1937-42
Elements: Line, Space, Color
The element line plays a big role in this painting, as does space as well. Line gives harmony to it as well. The organization of the lines also gives the piece repetition.
Alan Salabert
Untitled, 2002
Elements: Color, Line, Space
Space plays big part in this composition, along with color and line. It is very harmonized and creates a very distinct orderly repetition.
Untitled, 2009
Elements: Texture, Value
Very chaotic with its use of texture and value throughout the piece. The repetition of the black and blue texture also gives it unity as well.
Post-Minimalism
Chris Radtke
Ghost, 2009
Elements: Shape, Space
Very organized and monotony. Has a very orderly pattern that creates repetition within it.
Stand, 2008
Elements: Shape, Space, Form
Similar to the above composition, but has a totally different construction. Also very harmonized and orderly, with a sense of repetition.
Tony Cragg
Stack, 1975
Elements: Texture, Form, Shape
Both chaotic and harmonized at the same time. The amount of different kind of objects creates variety, but because the formation of all those object form a perfect square, it keeps the composition monotony.
Spectrum, 1985
Elements: Texture, Form, Color
Uses a variety of different colors and texture, yet still manages to create unity through form. Harmonized, but also a little chaotic too, because of the texture. The repetition is from the colors.

1x2 Repetition 2x1, 2009
Elements: Shape, Texture, Color
Harmonized and has a very strong pattern which creates repetition from the different variations of circles.
Circle, 2010
Elements: Shape, Line, Texture
Monotony and very organized, based on the strict lines that form the circle. Line creates repetition through circles.
Heather Bause
Swallows, 2009
Elements: Space, Shape
Very simple and harmonized. The same object is repeated and used in a pattern as well as a repetition. The use of space gives the piece unity.
Wood Warblers, 2010
Elements: Space, Shape, Value
Good use of dark and light. Also very simple, but creates a very dynamic aspect through its value and space, when using the repetition of the bird shapes.

Text As Texture Final Critique
For for my critique, my group had a lot to comment and suggest about my piece. While it was an overall good idea, my group thought that the background kind of overwhelmed the squares a bit and suggested that I should have you used a lighter shade of newspaper with less text on it. That way the squares would be able to pop out more. The texture background pops out but the squares don't (texture=3D, squares=2D). The continuance in the composition is good, but it doesn't harmonize well with background and it should pop out more. After I got my feedback, I did manage to put on a few more layers of cardboard on the squares to make it more three dimensional.
Accordion Book
Overall, the general feedback on my book was pretty positive. My group thought that it could have used more variety and also to make sure not to show the background of the textures. They also suggested a more neater construction of the book, which seemed to be on the weak side.
